Mad for Plaid

Finally, the timing is right to showcase some of my favorite patterns and textures of the entire year! Tweed, leather, wool, cashmere, flannel…all favorites! But one Autumn element that seems to top the rest is plaid. A yearly classic with undeniable heritage and history yet still an easy piece to mix and match and dress up or down.

My wardrobe is amply stocked with pleated plaid skirts, wintery flannel blouses, and bright tartan ponchos, but my home decor has yet to become involved in the trend. So, I have a few plaid inspired DIY projects for our home up my sleeve that I can’t wait to get started on…now I just have to slow down enough to get them finished! Keep your eyes open for updates in the next few weeks.

Running Out of Space?

Staircases are traditionally meant for one function, to carry you to the next level. While they can be a beautiful centerpiece to a space and an architectural statement in a home, they are still intended for a singular purpose. If you are like me, however, you may have realized that much of that precious square footage is wasted when it could be used for other things. So use it we do, by stacking piles of papers and books and misc. items meant to be carried up the stairs on the next trip…several days later, they still remain on the stairs!

How awesome would it be, then, to employ this innovative solution? No more wasted space! Instead every last inch of wall space can be used to store your library of books, collections of trinkets, family photos, or maybe even financial records…ok, maybe that would be best stored away in the office. But you get the idea.

Just think, all these hundreds of years of architectural history we have been living with the philosophy that staircases are for transportation only…I can’t believe it has taken us this long to figure out the stair-book-case!

Feelin’ Like Loafers: Back to School & the Non-Student

September is a month that will forever symbolize two things to me: the encroaching cool weather and the return to school. Of course, my life has changed dramatically since my graduation from college this past Spring, so school is no longer a part of my transition into Fall. And I am very glad to say that I have reached this chapter of my life…the non-student life. Regardless, I still feel those same longings that accompany the academic season. Desires for structure, pursuit, new people, new places, fresh material and the┬áconstant game of catching your goals by the tail and achieving more than you expected. Ahhh. I do miss that…….oops, what? Miss?! I swore I’d never say that! Alas, that’s not the first time I have contradicted myself. To celebrate both the achievement as well as the memory of school days gone by (maybe for you they are present), I am composing a collection of school inspired style. Study up!

More Therapy!

On Tuesday I told you about my search for spiral staircase solutions on Apartment Therapy’s site. Well, I got reeled in again and this time looking at gorgeous rooms with canopy beds. Yes, canopy beds…one of my dreams for the future of my little apartment. You may remember this image from a post I published a while back.

Well, this is the plan. Sleek, modern canopy bed, traditional but also understated headboard, and simple hanging drapery behind it all. It may be a while before anything comes of it but I have it well planted in my mental file of future projects to do. After browsing Apartment Therapy again (I told you it was dangerous) I found more images to inspire.

I found a few other from different sources.

Isn’t it fascinating to see a design element such as this interpreted in so many dramatically different ways. Yeah, way to much fun! Have a wonderful weekend.

What Do You Do with a Spiral Staircase

Spiral staircases…how do you work with them? I was recently asking myself this question since I am currently living with one. (You can see the pics of our new place here). As many apartment dwellers know, one of the best places to find apartment inspiration and unique problem solving is the amazing Apartment Therapy. So, I trotted on over and browsed to my heart’s content until I realized that I had more than a post’s worth of inspiring photos. Here are the remains of my spiral staircase scavenger hunt.

By the way, if you are living in an apartment or rental now, you really have to check this website out. It’s archives run deep so I warn against allowing yourself too much time to browse (hence today’s post). But if you have the time, it is an awesome resource for tried ideas at a moderate budget and within a reasonable time frame. Folks from all over post photos of their homes and projects. Professionally produced projects are also occasionally featured and you can find discussion forums targeting specific apartment living questions. I recommend that you take a look!

*Also, I want to send out the warmest wishes and biggest hugs to my mom and dad who are celebrating their 26th wedding anniversary today. Congratulations! I love you both so much and can’t wait to see you soon! (The picture below is for my mom because I know she’s reading this and loves pretty flowers…especially dark, ruby peonies).
